Why the price can differ

Panel quantity, length, wall irregularity, visible edges and off-site preparation affect price. A simple exposed cabinet side differs from a tall scribed return beside an uneven wall. Quotes should identify supplied versus owner-supplied panels and explain responsibility for replacement pieces if the original order does not match the measured gap.

Fitting owner-supplied standard panels differs from supplying custom fabricated finishes. Compare panel dimensions, edge treatments and wall-fitting requirements. A low estimate excluding visible edges may leave a result the owner considers unfinished, while a higher estimate should identify the specific finishing detail and preparation that explains the difference.

Materials and included work

Panels should match the cabinet system, finish and intended exposure. Edge treatment, joints and compatible fixings need to be identified in the quote. A visibly similar panel may have a different thickness or surface. Replacement supply for a misordered panel is separate from fitting labour, and damaged finished edges should be reviewed before cutting.

Decorative finishing does not authorize cutting structural elements, sealing required ventilation openings or permanently blocking service access. Stone fabrication, appliance alteration and refinishing mismatched panels are separate tasks. Where the selected piece cannot provide the agreed result, the owner should choose a replacement or revised detail before irreversible cutting proceeds.

Ask these questions in writing

  • Which visible edges and joints are included in the finish?
  • Where will cutting occur within the building rules?
  • Will any service access or ventilation need to remain open?

Assessment checks wall irregularities, cabinet alignment, door swing, appliances and the actual panel dimensions. It distinguishes a decorative cover from a support component or removable service-access piece. Photographs show the overall finish goal, while final measurements may depend on cabinets being installed and stable rather than on the original room drawing alone.

Account for access and change approval

Long decorative panels need protected handling through elevators and narrow kitchen doors. Clarify where dust-controlled cutting can occur within building rules and whether fabrication must happen elsewhere. A downtown apartment without suitable preparation space may require a different sequence from a vacant home with a workshop area and unrestricted access.

A remote appraisal can change after hands-on review. Ask what condition changed, which options are available and how the revision affects the scope before approving extra work. If a material gap remains unexplained after matching the scope, seek an independent second opinion.

Planning example

Two quotes both say finishing panels, but one includes edge treatment, wall fitting and off-site preparation while the other only attaches factory-cut pieces. The owner asks for the visible joints and edges to be specified. A meaningful comparison uses the intended finish, including the preparation space allowed by the condo, rather than assuming the same panel count means the same finished result.

Downtown Toronto context

A home near Union Station or CityPlace may have separate lobby and loading entrances. Include the actual service route, postal code and any building permissions. See the downtown focus perimeter and GTA enquiry guide before requesting a date.
