Get the room and items ready
Provide the chosen finish, panel codes and layout showing where each filler or exposed end belongs. Do not discard offcuts until the work is accepted. Remove items near the cutting and fitting area, and agree a permitted work location; occupied condo corridors and balconies may not be suitable spaces for cutting operations.
Panels should match the cabinet system, finish and intended exposure. Edge treatment, joints and compatible fixings need to be identified in the quote. A visibly similar panel may have a different thickness or surface. Replacement supply for a misordered panel is separate from fitting labour, and damaged finished edges should be reviewed before cutting.
Plan access and the order of work
Long decorative panels need protected handling through elevators and narrow kitchen doors. Clarify where dust-controlled cutting can occur within building rules and whether fabrication must happen elsewhere. A downtown apartment without suitable preparation space may require a different sequence from a vacant home with a workshop area and unrestricted access.
The agreed process confirms cabinet positions, marks which panels belong at each exposed edge and obtains approval of visible joints. Panels are fitted using suitable methods for the system, with finishes protected. The final review checks appearance, door movement, plinth alignment and any access points that must remain removable for later service.
Photographs that clarify this task
- Kitchen run showing each unfinished gap.
- Panel labels, lengths and finish samples.
- Close-up of walls, exposed edges and service openings.
Assessment checks wall irregularities, cabinet alignment, door swing, appliances and the actual panel dimensions. It distinguishes a decorative cover from a support component or removable service-access piece. Photographs show the overall finish goal, while final measurements may depend on cabinets being installed and stable rather than on the original room drawing alone.
Know the limit before arrival
Decorative finishing does not authorize cutting structural elements, sealing required ventilation openings or permanently blocking service access. Stone fabrication, appliance alteration and refinishing mismatched panels are separate tasks. Where the selected piece cannot provide the agreed result, the owner should choose a replacement or revised detail before irreversible cutting proceeds.
Send the service, property postal code, preferred date and the relevant preparation details together. Share private access instructions only when arranging the actual visit.
Planning example
An owner supplies a tall end panel in a similar white finish, but its thickness differs from the planned system. Before fitting, the panel code, finish and dimensions are checked against the exposed cabinet side. Preparation includes a decision on whether the supplied part is suitable. Cutting it first would make a mistaken order harder to return and could leave an avoidable visible mismatch.
Downtown Toronto context
A home near Union Station or CityPlace may have separate lobby and loading entrances. Include the actual service route, postal code and any building permissions. See the downtown focus perimeter and GTA enquiry guide before requesting a date.
