Why the price can differ
Frame type, desktop size, drawers, return panels and cable-management accessories explain the labour differences between desks. Dismantling an occupied workstation and moving equipment are additional tasks. A powered desk estimate should identify the model and supplied accessories, avoiding an open-ended promise to make every computer and peripheral work afterward.
Two similarly sized desks can differ substantially when one has a simple frame and the other includes motorized adjustment, drawers and a corner return. Compare identical accessory lists and the same placement responsibilities. Assembly labour should be separated from computer setup, cable installation and any wall-mounted equipment work.
Materials and included work
The manufacturer desktop, frame, feet and fixings should be a compatible set. Hollow or lightweight tops may not accept an arbitrary monitor clamp or screw pattern. Cable trays and drawers need suitable clearance throughout adjustment. Use supplied power components only as directed; damaged cables or uncertain electrical modifications require a separate qualified assessment.
Furniture assembly excludes hardwired electrical work, network installation and modification of desk motors or controls. Wall-mounted worktops, heavy equipment brackets and damaged frames need their own scope. A sit-stand mechanism that faults or binds is not forced through its travel; the unresolved condition is documented for manufacturer or specialist support.
Ask these questions in writing
- Which drawers, returns and cable accessories are included?
- Will the owner remove and reconnect computer equipment?
- Does the supplied top match the desk frame and accessories?
The assessment matches the top to the specified frame, checks equipment clearance and identifies drawers, modesty panels and cable accessories. For height-adjustable products it records the exact model and supplied electrical components. Desk installation does not assess the building circuit or promise an ergonomic outcome from photographs alone.
Account for access and change approval
A narrow office nook can leave insufficient space to assemble an L-shaped desk. Confirm whether the return attaches on the left or right and whether panels can pass the doorway after assembly. Shared workspaces and downtown condos also need a plan for noise hours, floor protection and keeping the exit path open.
A remote appraisal can change after hands-on review. Ask what condition changed, which options are available and how the revision affects the scope before approving extra work. If a material gap remains unexplained after matching the scope, seek an independent second opinion.
Planning example
Two desks have the same desktop width. One is a fixed frame; the other has powered adjustment, a return and three accessory trays. The owner asks for each component to be listed instead of comparing an unexplained desk-assembly total. Computer setup remains a separate request, making it clear whether a higher estimate reflects furniture complexity or unrelated work on the owner's equipment.
Downtown Toronto context
A home near Union Station or CityPlace may have separate lobby and loading entrances. Include the actual service route, postal code and any building permissions. See the downtown focus perimeter and GTA enquiry guide before requesting a date.
