Why the price can differ
Top weight, base complexity, extension leaves and the handling team affect the estimate. Old-table dismantling, stair carrying and furniture moves should be itemized separately. An extending table may require more adjustment than a fixed table of the same length; photographs and the model link make that difference visible before arrival.
Compare fixed and extending tables separately, and distinguish light laminated tops from heavy stone or glass. The number of pieces is a poor guide to handling effort. A written estimate should explain whether the price covers only assembly or also lifting, placement, levelling adjustments and the extension function demonstration.
Materials and included work
Use the original table hardware, manufacturer spacers and the supplied base components. Glass, stone and veneered tops require their own handling and fixing arrangements; they are not interchangeable substrates. Protectors or level adjustments should suit the product. Adhesive repairs to a cracked top are outside ordinary assembly and require separate assessment.
Assembly does not certify a table for an unspecified load, commercial use or standing on the top. Cracked glass, damaged stone and stripped structural attachment points require a stop and a separate remedy. Modification of a base to fit a different top is custom work, not a standard furniture assembly inclusion.
Ask these questions in writing
- Does the quote include the full extension mechanism and leaves?
- How many handlers are allowed for the tabletop?
- Are chair assembly and removal of the old table separate?
The assessment records tabletop material, dimensions, base type and whether extension mechanisms arrive preassembled. Photographs help distinguish an intact boxed table from an older table with stripped fixing points. The plan also considers chair movement, nearby glazing and whether a protective rug will interfere with stable contact at the feet.
Account for access and change approval
A large tabletop may need more than one handler even where its base is light. Confirm elevator dimensions, turning room and a temporary unloading position that does not block the corridor. In smaller downtown condos, plan where the table can be assembled before it is turned into its final position.
A remote appraisal can change after hands-on review. Ask what condition changed, which options are available and how the revision affects the scope before approving extra work. If a material gap remains unexplained after matching the scope, seek an independent second opinion.
Planning example
An owner receives a table-assembly estimate but also wants six separately boxed chairs assembled and the old table removed. Those additions are made explicit before comparing another provider. A table-only amount cannot be judged against a dining-set amount. The revised scope should also clarify who handles the heavy top and whether packaging removal includes all seven products or only the table cartons.
Downtown Toronto context
A home near Union Station or CityPlace may have separate lobby and loading entrances. Include the actual service route, postal code and any building permissions. See the downtown focus perimeter and GTA enquiry guide before requesting a date.
