Plan the island around the room
An island changes how people move through a kitchen. Measure the room, cabinetry, appliance doors and traffic paths before ordering. Check that the island and its cartons can reach the unit by elevator, stairwell and door. A large unit that fits the kitchen floor may still obstruct a refrigerator or dishwasher when its door is open. Send dimensions, product details and a simple floor plan for review.
Kitchen islands may arrive as flat-pack cabinets, a prefabricated base or separate storage units with a countertop. The chosen system determines whether cabinet assembly, levelling, panel fitting, drawer adjustment or a separate countertop installer is needed. Special-order units shipped from China should include instructions and a complete hardware list.
Assembly, stability and finishing
The base must be assembled square, placed on the planned line and checked for level before finishing pieces are fitted. Some products require floor anchoring; that depends on the substrate, any concealed services and building approval. Condo floors can have restrictions that rule out drilling in certain locations. The installation plan needs to address those limits before work starts.
Doors, drawers, end panels and toe kicks are checked for clearance after placement. If the countertop is separate, cabinet stability and final measurements should be confirmed before templating. Changes to the island position after a top is made may create alignment problems, so settle the layout early.
Electrical, plumbing and countertop coordination
Islands containing a sink, cooktop or outlets require additional planning. Electrical, plumbing and gas connections belong with qualified licensed trades. Stone or other heavy tops may need specialist handling and installation. Provide the appliance and countertop specifications so the project can be sequenced, but treat those trade scopes separately unless expressly agreed.
Building management may require contractor registration, service elevator reservations, noise windows or approval for anchoring. Ask about those rules before the installation date. In a downtown condo, package storage and waste removal also need a plan; elsewhere in the GTA, access and unloading still matter.
