Why the price can differ
Frame quantity matters, but large glazed pieces, mixed hanging systems, precise alignment, high positions and unsuitable existing fittings also affect the scope. Separately identify any old holes, paint touch-up or furniture movement so these are not silently added to an otherwise simple hanging estimate.
A single framed photograph and a large glazed artwork are different handling jobs even when both require one wall position. An adhesive proposal also differs from a mechanical attachment and should be compared for surface suitability, appearance, reversibility and the product instructions.
Materials and included work
Picture hooks, frame fittings and adhesive products are different systems with different conditions. The proposed products should match the frame and confirmed wall surface, with manufacturer limitations followed. Existing hardware supplied in a frame box should be checked rather than automatically reused.
This is ordinary interior display work after suitability assessment. Valuable conservation-sensitive art, unknown fragile plaster, unusually heavy objects, inaccessible stairwell positions or restricted condominium surfaces may need a specialist or further investigation. No universal hanger capacity or damage-free removal promise should be given.
Ask these questions in writing
- Does the estimate include checking the rear frame fittings?
- Are old-hole filling and paint touch-ups included or excluded?
- What happens if the wall is unsuitable for the planned attachment?
The appraisal records frame dimensions, approximate item weight, rear fittings and the visible wall surface. The attending worker checks whether the proposed attachment is appropriate for the item and substrate; a photograph cannot confirm concealed wall construction or the absence of building services.
Account for access and change approval
The worker needs a stable working position directly in front of each approved location. A narrow gap behind a sofa or a frame above a stairwell can change the required access and handling arrangements, particularly when the artwork has large glazing.
A remote appraisal can change after hands-on review. Ask what condition changed, which options are available and how the revision affects the scope before approving extra work. If a material gap remains unexplained after matching the scope, seek an independent second opinion.
Planning example
Two estimates describe hanging the same four pieces, but one includes filling the old holes and the other excludes wall repairs. The owner asks both providers to separate hanging, repair and paint expectations. Once those obligations match, the remaining difference can be discussed using frame handling, materials and attendance rather than treating the lower headline figure as proof that the other quote is excessive.
Downtown Toronto context
A home near Union Station or CityPlace may have separate lobby and loading entrances. Include the actual service route, postal code and any building permissions. See the downtown focus perimeter and GTA enquiry guide before requesting a date.
