What this job is trying to solve
An interior door that rubs or sags may have a hinge issue, but similar symptoms can come from a swollen door, damaged frame or building movement. A small adjustment visit should identify the cause sufficiently to define the repair rather than promise that tightening hardware always solves it.
Observe where the door contacts the frame, whether the gaps change through travel and whether hinge screws or surrounding material are damaged. Ask when the problem began and whether moisture or other doors are affected. Identify whether the door has any fire or building-system role.
Choose the right extent of work
A hinge adjustment can be smaller than replacing the door, but it is only appropriate when the hinge arrangement is the issue. Compare the cause being addressed, included parts and finishing obligations. A quote for tightening visible hardware is not equivalent to repairing damaged frame material.
Fire-rated corridor doors, closers, security systems, structural movement and major frame reconstruction are outside this ordinary interior adjustment scope. Sudden widespread sticking or water-related swelling needs investigation. The job should not compromise a door required for fire separation, access control or another building function.
How the work is organized
Observe the original symptom, explain the accepted adjustment and perform only the approved minor work. Review opening, closing and visible gaps afterward. If the underlying problem requires frame repair, door alteration or specialist assessment, stop and explain the next scope rather than continuing by trial and error.
The door needs room to open normally, with a clear and safe work area on both sides. Small condo bathrooms and closely spaced doors may restrict working position. Confirm whether pets, privacy needs or household movement require temporary arrangements while the door is being assessed.
A useful first enquiry
- Door closed showing all gaps
- Hinges and surrounding frame
- Floor clearance and rubbing location
Use the preparation guide to plan the space, and the written-scope guide to compare the proposed work.
Planning example
A bedroom door starts rubbing after new flooring is installed. The owner asks for hinge tightening, but the timing suggests that floor clearance also needs assessment. The provider checks the actual contact point before choosing a remedy. This avoids repeatedly adjusting sound hinges to address an issue that belongs to the changed floor level, door geometry or another condition outside a minor hinge service.
Downtown Toronto context
A home near Union Station or CityPlace may have separate lobby and loading entrances. Include the actual service route, postal code and any building permissions. See the downtown focus perimeter and GTA enquiry guide before requesting a date.
