Why the price can differ
Runner identification, drawer quantity, access, available adjustment features and replacement-part sourcing affect the scope. A standard alignment appointment differs from removing a built-in cabinet or fabricating a new drawer box. Confirm whether diagnosis and a return visit for ordered parts are included or separately priced.
Blum TANDEM and other runner systems have model-specific adjustment and retaining features, so a generic slide repair promise is insufficient. Compare an alignment service with an equivalent alignment service. Replacing runners, repairing the box and rebuilding the cabinet are materially different scopes requiring separate written descriptions.
Materials and included work
An adjustment may require no replacement parts, while a failed runner needs a compatible model and fixing arrangement. Drawer sides, locking devices and soft-close components are not universally interchangeable. The materials list should state whether the proposal retains, adjusts or replaces the existing runner system.
This task excludes rebuilding a structurally damaged cabinet, modifying electrical drawers or promising restoration of a discontinued runner. A missing safety or retaining component must not be bypassed. Persistent cabinet distortion or water damage may require a cabinet specialist rather than further runner adjustment.
Ask these questions in writing
- Can the runner model be identified before parts are ordered?
- Is this an adjustment or a component replacement estimate?
- What happens if the cabinet or drawer box is the underlying problem?
Check the drawer model where identifiable, runner type, front gaps, closure behaviour and visible damage. Observe the drawer empty as well as in ordinary use if practical. Separate a simple alignment issue from a distorted box, failed runner or cabinet that is no longer square.
Account for access and change approval
The worker needs room to remove and inspect the drawer safely, with a protected place to set it down. Clear nearby breakables and explain any unusually heavy drawer box. Under-counter appliances and narrow condo kitchens can limit access to the rear runner connections.
A remote appraisal can change after hands-on review. Ask what condition changed, which options are available and how the revision affects the scope before approving extra work. If a material gap remains unexplained after matching the scope, seek an independent second opinion.
Planning example
A low estimate allows for runner adjustment, while another includes replacing the runners. The owner asks whether either provider has identified the existing system and whether cabinet distortion has been ruled out. A replacement proposal should explain its reason and compatibility. The written scope also states whether sourcing and fitting ordered parts will require a separately priced return visit after the initial assessment.
Downtown Toronto context
A home near Union Station or CityPlace may have separate lobby and loading entrances. Include the actual service route, postal code and any building permissions. See the downtown focus perimeter and GTA enquiry guide before requesting a date.
