Cabinet handle replacement: written scope & price factors

Compare the included work, materials, access and price factors for cabinet handle replacement. Ask clear questions before approving changes.

Why the price can differ

Handle count is only one variable; access, mixed door thicknesses, hole-pattern changes, damaged substrate and cosmetic covering work also matter. An estimate based on reusing sound matching holes should say so. Confirm whether unpacking, organizing hardware and disposal of old handles are included.

Knob-to-knob replacement differs from converting knobs to two-hole handles. Reusing matching sound holes also differs from repairing old marks and drilling a new layout. Compare the same handle inventory, sample approval and cabinet finishing expectations before deciding that one estimate is expensive.

Materials and included work

Handles, knobs, fixing screws and any decorative backing plates need to match the cabinet thickness and chosen appearance. Screw length is a compatibility issue, not a reason to improvise a replacement. Filling unused holes, drilling new patterns and finish matching must be specified separately.

This scope does not include electrical handles, appliance modifications, extensive cabinet rebuilding or invisible refinishing guarantees. New hole patterns may leave visible marks even after filling. Fragile laminate or damaged particleboard can prevent a simple swap and should be documented before additional work is approved.

Ask these questions in writing

  • Do the new handles match every existing hole spacing?
  • Are any new holes or visible old-hole repairs required?
  • Will you fit one sample for approval before completing the group?

Count doors and drawers, compare existing hole spacing with the new handles and inspect the cabinet material around the fixings. Check handle clearance against adjacent fronts and appliances. Note any loose fronts or damaged holes, since those may need a separate repair before new hardware is fitted.

Account for access and change approval

The worker needs access inside each door or drawer to reach the rear fixings. Clear stored breakables, remove under-sink obstructions without disturbing plumbing and protect nearby countertops. Tall upper cabinets or tight appliance gaps may change the handling needed for otherwise identical hardware.

A remote appraisal can change after hands-on review. Ask what condition changed, which options are available and how the revision affects the scope before approving extra work. If a material gap remains unexplained after matching the scope, seek an independent second opinion.

Planning example

Two estimates assume different methods: one reuses matching sound holes, while the other includes new holes and cosmetic treatment of old marks. The owner asks for the same hardware inventory and finish expectations in writing. A clear proposal also identifies whether damaged particleboard requires additional work. Only after those assumptions match does the remaining price difference indicate an actual difference in comparable service.
