Get the room and items ready
Decide which books travel and remove loose papers from shelves. Put identity papers, closing documents and immediately needed records in a separate owner-controlled folder.
Use suitably sized sturdy cartons, restrained fill quantities and clear shelf or room labels. Agree whether archives require a more detailed inventory than general household books.
Plan access and the order of work
Check the distance between shelving and the carton staging point. A small study can become impassable quickly if every filled box remains on its floor.
Work shelf by shelf, keep file groups together, protect vulnerable bindings and close manageable cartons before moving to the next section of the bookcase.
Photographs that clarify this task
- Shelf quantity and depth
- Representative file organization
- Stairs or corridor from study
Separate ordinary books from documents that must remain with the owner. Identify delicate bindings, files needed during the move and any agreed handling restrictions.
Know the limit before arrival
Ordinary packing does not include confidential-record classification, secure shredding or rare-book conservation. No document should be discarded simply because it looks old or duplicated.
Send the service, property postal code, preferred date and the relevant preparation details together. Share private access instructions only when arranging the actual visit.
Planning example
The resident places closing documents, identification and current medical information in a folder they will carry personally. Remaining file groups stay in their existing order, while books are sorted shelf by shelf. Small cartons are staged near the room exit without blocking it. This preparation reduces the chance of overloading a large box or mixing active records with books that will not be opened immediately.
Downtown Toronto context
A home near Union Station or CityPlace may have separate lobby and loading entrances. Include the actual service route, postal code and any building permissions. See the downtown focus perimeter and GTA enquiry guide before requesting a date.
