Furniture protection and disassembly for moving: written scope & price factors

Compare the included work, materials, access and price factors for furniture protection and disassembly for moving. Ask clear questions before approving changes.

Why the price can differ

Joint complexity, panel size, finish sensitivity and destination assembly time affect the quote. A transport-only line should not be treated as equivalent to protection, careful dismantling and complete reassembly.

Compare shrink wrapping with a complete protection method. A visible outer covering does not prove vulnerable corners, glass inserts and hardware have each received suitable attention.

Materials and included work

Specify padding compatible with the finish, protected corners and labelled hardware containers. Avoid assuming adhesive film can safely touch every veneer, leather surface or recently refinished component.

Routine moving does not repair weakened flat-pack joints, concealed damage or antique construction. Specialist items require separate assessment, and force should not substitute for missing assembly instructions.

Ask these questions in writing

  • Which items will be disassembled?
  • Is destination reassembly included?
  • How are finish protection and hardware tracking handled?

Record material, existing scratches and construction before disassembly. Identify manufacturer instructions, loose joints and pieces that should remain assembled because taking them apart may weaken their fittings.

Account for access and change approval

Check how disassembled panels will travel through the elevator and where reassembly can occur. Large pieces can still require clear floor area even after their overall dimensions have been reduced.

A remote appraisal can change after hands-on review. Ask what condition changed, which options are available and how the revision affects the scope before approving extra work. If a material gap remains unexplained after matching the scope, seek an independent second opinion.

Planning example

Two furniture-moving offers differ because one covers wrapping and transport while the other includes careful disassembly and reassembly. The resident requests the same item list and photographs in both estimates. Finish sensitivity and the loose joint are disclosed. This establishes whether the extra labour concerns handling and assembly, while keeping any structural repair outside the quotation until it has been assessed separately.

Downtown Toronto context

A home near Union Station or CityPlace may have separate lobby and loading entrances. Include the actual service route, postal code and any building permissions. See the downtown focus perimeter and GTA enquiry guide before requesting a date.
